The Major Causes Of Failure In Leadership
Failure in leadership is a collection of either bad habits or a refusal to follow proven ways or techniques of leading people successfully.
First of all the ability to organize. A leader in any organisation must have the ability to organize varying all aspects of his or her business, such as finance, paperwork, plans, delegation etc. These are basic areas, where you would expect a top person to be able to get things completed.
You can never be too busy to deal with the everyday running of your business or the minutia. Now by all means use professional help or outsource, but just get the job done.
Secondly be ready to be a servant of the many, because service to many, leads to greatness. (Jim Rohn) If you want a job completed, make sure that you know how to do it first.
Do not have anyone doing anything that you have not done yourself or are willing to do. One of the reasons is that you have to be able to explain to the other person what you want done.
So experience is crucial here, to be able to guide someone down the right path. By being a servant first, you show your team or able lieutenants that you have done it before and you can do it, then they will believe that they can do it to.
Thirdly accepting the fact that you get paid for what you actually do, obtaining results and not for your knowledge. In other words knowing that we primarily get paid for value in the marketplace.
It is all about doing the work, receiving the respect you deserve, followed by the correct amount of compensation. You basically get paid what you are worth.
Never fear competition, welcome it. What you should be concentrating on is your ability to perform certain tasks well and then having the ability to delegate to the right people.
Efficient leaders know their stuff and do what is required. If you worry about the competition, then you have already lost. But that doesn’t mean to say that you ignore the competiton just watch and learn from them.
Always use your creative imagination wisely and if you cannot you will be incapable of dealing with obstacles, problems, challenges and emergencies, as they arise Learn the arts of praising and complimenting. Praise, if used correctly will be a vital tool in your personal development portfolio.
In other words avoid being selfish and do not hog the limelight. Let the plaudits go to the team and recognise their true worth. Learn when to praise and compliment, refraining from criticising, condemning and complaining, as best you can.
Seek never to go over the top in anything you do, such as drinking alcohol or perpetually being annoyed and losing your temper. This will destroy any good work that you do, The key sentence here is avoid intemperance of any description. Failure in leadership is really a cop out.
Disloyalty is a big factor in building a sustainable team. You must be loyal to your business, your products, your customers and your team. If you are not your business will crumble and contempt will set in very quickly. A leader is a leader all of the time, not some of the time.
Another area is dictating to or trying to impress people with your importance. Instil a culture of trust and honesty, not an atmosphere of tyranny and fear. Be a leader whose conduct is known for sympathy and understanding. Leaders lead by example and results.
Merge or blend into the background and let people come to you. If you are good at what you do people will flock towards and want to spend time around you.
It is not about the title or office that you hold, it’s about being approachable and human. These are the major failures of leadership, so keeping moving in the right direction and be aware of what you are doing moving forward.
