Why Do Powerful Leaders Always Take The High Road?
Exceptional leaders must do what is right and should never be drawn into something that is unethical, dishonest or downright shady. Mainly because it will return and hit them where it hurts, in the pocket, but more importantly it will impact on their credibility and trustworthiness.
Top leaders always take the high road and concentrate on their own goals and do not become embroiled with retaliation or revenge, no matter what the circumstances are. If you allow yourself to be taken down to a gutter level you will expand and waste an enormous amount of energy getting you back up to the level you were at previously.
When you ‘take the high road’ it means doing the right thing even if it’s not popular or easy.I had to do these hundreds of times, maybe thousands of times whilst serving as a police officer in London for over 30 years. An example of when I took the high road, was when someone called me a name and I would just turn and walk away instead of getting involved in an argument. Inside I wanted to sort them out, but in the long run, it was better for me if I just let it go. Working as a police officer made you very tolerant.
So, to become a powerful and successful leader you will have to lead by example, be the guiding light or beacon and always take the high road, even when you do not want to.
